matthew 5:14-16 Animation Process
During the Covid Pandemic shutdown I was sparked by a thought to begin reading the bible. However, instead of reading the whole bible, I decided to read certain scriptures and use my motion design skills to interpret those scriptures according to my understanding. I researched online to see if anyone else had animated bible scriptures online, and did not find any interesting animated bible scriptures. I decided to start a personal project where I created animations of scriptures. I experiment with different styles, stories, visual metaphors, and typography, in order to tell a story using my understanding of the message in the scripture.
You are the light of the world. A city set upon a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5: 14-16
CONCEPT
Inspired by Kanye West’s “Power + Wash Us In the Blood” videos, and the Dada Art Movement, I set out to create a video that used these two inspirations in conjunction, to create a piece that revolved around the state of the world and our actions within it. As a Christian with a religious upbringing, a certain standard is required and expected for one to uphold. Now, I’m not saying that I’m an evil person, but as an idealist and individual whose insecurities push me to strive for perfection (which doesn’t exist), I believe I fall short of this certain standard. However, I do believe God still loves me despite this.
I channel these feelings behind the usage of a paradox for the concept of the video. I set out to create a tension and contradiction between the words on screen and the visuals that are paired with them. I incorporate the themes of, a love for money (in the sense of money becoming a God and something that we worship, instead, of a tool that is used to build and for resources), violence, and drugs. I use disturbing images, scenes, music, sfx, to drive home this idea of a contradiction to the words your reading on screen, to create a mirror of the society we view in the world today.
The animation of the type moves quick and erratic to reinforce the idea of chaos and disruption. I also place a lot of animated elements moving in the background to distract and disturb the viewer as well.
